Activists have built treehouses like this one in the ancient forest.

Hambach Forest: Journalist dies after fall

German media have reported this morning that a journalist has died following a fall from a treehouse bridge at the protest site in the German Hambach Forest.

A man fell from over 14 meters and suffered fatal injuries and died after being flown out of the area by helicopter.

The German police in the city of Aachen has spent the last seven days removing environmental activists from the ancient forest. Protesters are objecting to the development of a lignite mine in the region.

The police in Aachen say that evictions were not happening in the area when the man fell and that other efforts to clear activists were stopped at the time.

Following the tragedy North Rhine-Westphalia’s Interior Minister Herbert Reul confirmed the temporary suspension of police activities in the area.
