In March 2025, we gathered in the European Parliament for our photography exhibition ‘Factory Farming: Unveiling the Hidden Costs’, organised jointly by the European Environmental Bureau and the European Institute for Animal Law and Policy.
The exhibit, composed of the daring work of 12 photojournalists across 14 EU countries, was an ambitious attempt to visually connect the many overlapping harms caused by factory farming in Europe today.
Despite efforts from the far right to censor part of the exhibition, our messages were clear and resounding: the current model is unsustainable for animals, rural communities, and the natural foundation on which we all depend. We expect the European Commission to acknowledge the clear and growing calls across Europe demanding action to improve animal welfare, and to address the scourge that is factory farming. Concretely, it is time for the Commission to deliver on its promise to revise the outdated EU animal welfare legislation and to End the Cage Age.
Hosted by MEPs from five political groups, this exhibition was a powerful demonstration of the broad political support for improvements in animal welfare standards in Europe. We heard from not only those hosting MEPs, but also civil society representatives as well as our keynote speaker, Jo-Anne McArthur, photojournalist and founder of We Animals.
